The 2010 CCM U+ Crazy Light may be the lightest hockey stick ever made. The stick is a marvel of engineering and materials, but maybe too much of a good thing?
Constructed of ultra thin, unidirectional 100% carbon fiber composite, this stick weighs in at an incredible 405 grams -- the lightest hockey stick ever made by CCM and by far the lightest I've tested. The carbon fiber construction, featuring a full box carbon wrap design and graphite blade "bridge", is incredibly stiff. Blade construction is built on a foam core to improve feel and dampening. Shaft geometry (CCM's "C" contour) offers a modest concave design along the front and back surfaces with pronounced rounding of the corners and slightly convex top and bottom shaft walls. The shaft is finished in a soft matte finish without a traditional grip coating.
The first thing you notice when you pick up the stick is the incredible lightness -- it is, by far the lightest hockey stick I have ever held. The lack of weight was almost odd, and made me more aware of the blade, as it seemed to dominate the comparatively light shaft. Despite the sticks lack of mass and overall blade weighting, stick handling and feel were outstanding -- from my notes, "a perfect stiff feel... seems to read your mind. Super responsive, lithe feel."
Shooting scores were exceptional for wrist shots, recording the highest average speed of any stick tested, and rather average for slap shots, scoring in the low - middle range for Pro-level sticks. Shot accuracy was excellent for both wrist and slap shots.
Bottom Line: The lightest hockey stick on the market. Excellent feel and responsiveness and the best wrist shot performance of all sticks tested. A technical work of art, but for some, it's extreme light weight, might be too much of a good thing. 92 points.
