The Easton Synergy SE16, introduced during the 2008 - 2009 season, is the next generation of the very popular Synergy SE series. New for the line is Easton's "Focused Weight Technology" (FWT), which adds weights to the heel of the blade and lower shaft with the goal of improved feel and performance.
Graphics and appearance of the SE16 is similar to the prior synergy models but with less silver and more solid color in the shaft. Similar to older models, curve patterns for the SE16 are somewhat limited, offering the familiar Iginla, Sakic, and Zetterberg patterns, and the newer Getzlaf and Drury curves.
Construction of the SE16 is based on compression molded unidirectional carbon with kevlar/graphite blade construction. Shaft geometry is slightly concave on the front and back walls and slightly concave top and bottom walls. Shaft corners havea very small rounded radius. Blade attachment is performed after shaft molding and attached rather low in the shaft. The shaft throat and blade connection is tapered slightly. Grip (red color) and clear (blue color) models are available.
In the lab the SE16 was nothing short of amazing -- if improved performance and feel were the goal of the SE16, it's a huge success. Testing scores for the SE16 were the highest of any stick I've tested. Stick handling was quick, balanced with perfect feedback and feel -- from my notes, "Perfect balance of responsiveness, feel and rigidity". Shooting with the SE16 was effortless with laser quick wrist shots and booming slappers -- and both with exceptional accuracy. From my shooting notes, "Wow! What a cannon! Incredible response, mid-low kick with great flex, feels super loaded, the best shooter so far!
Bottom Line: The SE16 maybe the perfect hockey stick. With near perfect balance, feel, power and accuracy, the SE16 is the best all purpose hockey stick I have ever tested. My only beef is a fairly limited curve offerings for the retail crowd. Awesome! 98 points.
